Current Organization: New York City Department of Education

“Mentoring a student in a large failing high school in the Bronx, I discovered the overwhelming disadvantages many young, low-income students face. I realized for the first time how fortunate I was to have a quality education that forged my confidence and curiosity and afforded me a wide array of career options. I saw how critical it was that my mentee and all children should have the same experience with their education.”

Sophie Lippincott currently serves as the director of knowledge management in the Division of Accountability and Achievement Resources at the New York City Department of Education. Her team facilitates the identifying, capturing, and sharing of effective practices and resources and oversees the development of the DOE’s knowledge sharing platform, ARIS Connect. During Sophie’s tenure, the number of visitors to the knowledge sharing platform, ARIS Connect, has doubled and over 70% of principals report that ARIS Connect is helpful in improving teacher practice. Prior to joining the NYCDOE, Lippincott was a principal in the Education Practice of the Parthenon Group, a management consulting firm based in Boston, where she worked with foundations, charter management organizations, urban districts, and state departments of education on a variety of strategic planning and performance management projects. She also spent over three years at the Standard & Poor’s School Evaluation Services group in New York, developing a web-based, school data analysis tool for superintendents and parents. Before going to business school, Lippincott spent one year teaching English as a substitute teacher and supporting strategic planning projects at an American school in Thessaloniki, Greece. Lippincott holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School. Lippincott is a participant in The Broad Residency in Urban Education (Class of 2009-2011), serving her two-year Residency at the New York City Department of Education.
